How Can Creating Videos Increase Search Traffic?
The short answer is because Google includes Youtube videos in search results. So if you can find a Youtube video, by searching a keyword that is displaying video(s) on the first page of search results, you may be able to take over that spot by creating your own video.
But having a YouTube link on page one to your video isn’t all. You can also embed that video on one of your webpages. This will increase the chance of that webpage ranking on page one by 53%! That is right, webpages with video on them rank better in Google.
It makes sense, content is king, you have heard it no doubt. And by enhancing the content on your website to include video, you are creating a better user experience. Google picks up on this and rewards your content by ranking it higher.
So the benefit to creating keyword targeted video is two fold:
- First your Youtube link may rank on the first page of Google for your target keywords.
- Second you can embed your video on your webpage to help your webpage also rank on page one of Google.
By now you may have figured out that this article isn’t going to talk about how awesome video media is for creating online content that converts customers, although it truly is. This article is going to focus on video SEO techniques that can help you gain visibility in search engines.
Here let me explain exactly how we have performed video SEO for a client, and I’ll share some pointers to keep in mind as you try creating your own SEO video.
Find One Of Your Target Keywords Which Returns Videos In Search Results
Get your keyword research data handy so that you have a list of your target keywords. Start searching your keywords in Google, it shouldn’t take long to find a search result for one of your keywords that has video(s) in it. Planning and creating a video to rank #1 for the search term you identify, will most likely be the time consuming and often times outsourced part of this strategy.
Once you have used your keyword list and Google to find a search result on the first page with at least one video in it, your goal is to make a video which will outrank that video. This can be tough and you want to make sure that you create a video worthy of taking the spot. Create something that Google should rank there for users to find what they are searching for.
When we saw that “Austin heating repair” returned a video sometimes on the first page of search results, we created a 30 second commercial highlighting heating services that one of our HVAC clients offered. We optimized the video title to include the keyword “Austin heating repair” and we also peppered the video description with our main keyword.
The heating repair services video ended up ranking as the #1 video in organic search results for our target keyword, and it still ranks their to this day. However, at the time of this post the #1 video is on page #3 of search results.
Google only sometimes includes the video link results on page #1, so luckily for this particular client they also have a text link ranking on page #1. You should try to find a relevant webpage on your own website to embed your YouTube video on, it will help increase that webpage’s ranking. We embedded our commercial onto the client’s homepage for the winter season, it made sense to share a video about heating repair services.
This is an example of how video can be a great component to your SEO strategy. This client benefits from having two links on the first page of search results during the times Google includes video on page #1 of its search results. For all other times they still have their text link on page #1!
So now that you see how SEO videos can rank in search results and increase traffic for your target keywords, let me share with you some advice to ensure you may have the same success. I will also share a couple of guides with you to help you get started with YouTube setup and optimization.
Tips To Keep In Mind For Your SEO Videos
Create Great Content That Deserves To Rank #1
Google is looking to answer a searcher’s query, so give Google something great to deliver to your potential customer. Something that really earns that number one spot and will help convert the search visitor into a customer.
Try to educate, inform, entertain, and persuade with the video that you make. Keep the topic focused and include the most important information about the topic in the video. If you don’t have experience making videos or need help getting creative then you should consider hiring a professional who has experience creating digital content, specifically videos.
Keep Your SEO Video Light So It Loads Fast
If you want to see the best results, you need a video that loads quickly. Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing tend to favor fast loading videos. Take into consideration the video player size and resolution on the page. And you also want to choose a format that loads fast, such as MPEG4, Flv or SWF.
You should be asking yourself, do I need HD for this video – maybe it is a powerpoint and resolution may be slightly reduced? How large is the image compression size? If you are hiring someone to make your video then make sure to clarify in the video’s requirements that you would like for the file size to be optimized for YouTube.
The Title is Key. Make It Catchy But Include Your Keywords.
Professional SEO providers know that in most cases you have only about 3 seconds to make a positive impression on the searcher, or they will click elsewhere. To attract more traffic for when your video is displayed in search results, you want to make the title attractive.
Here are a couple great blog posts from Brian Clark at copyblogger on writing killer titles. The title is a key component in attracting and engaging the potential consumer. But don’t forget that for SEO, effective placement of keywords is important as well.
Make A Company YouTube Channel And Link it Up.
It’s great to have a video on your site, AND to have videos ranking but there is yet another benefit to making SEO videos. Getting YouTube links. YouTube makes it easy to create your own company channel online. Then you can place multiple videos online about various topics that are relevant to your target keywords, link them to one another, and then link them all back to your website for some powerful backlinks.
How Can I Get Started?
Although you may need to hire a professional to create your video, most anyone can create their own YouTube Channel and even optimize it themselves.
